John 4:24 - What Are Jesus' Words about Worship?

Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus told her, “Believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews. But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth.  Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him. God is spirit,  and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth.” - John 4:20-24  biblegateway.com

On a day when we can't gather in our usual place of worship Jesus gives the "Woman at the Well" some truths about worship that we can use.

1. Worry about Worship not where you Worship! 20-21

Be sure to worship every day because, "This is the day the Lord has made let us rejoice and be glad in it."

(Psalm 118 :24)

But we do need to worship especially on the "Lord's Day" because it should remind us the resurrection of Our Lord.

2. Jesus Identifies Three Kinds of Worshippers! 22 & 24

    A. Samaritans of Jesus's day - Desired to worship but didn't know all the truth.

Because of past sins they had been shunned by the Jews of the day.

Sadly all of God's revelation in the Old Testament wasn't available to them.

As Christians we do need to practice Psalm 1:1-2 so that we can have the promise of Psalm 1:3; but we should never shun anyone.

But I do believe that we should "hang out" with growing believers because we do "hang with those we hang with." And Believers need one friend that's more mature than they are - to help ensure themselves to get Godly advice."

    B. The Jews of Jesus's day - desired to worship but had turned Worship into rules and regulations instead of a relationship with God - the creator of the universe, the Deliverer of their Nation, and the Revealer of Truth who wanted to be their Father - to love them, provide and protect them like a good human father does his child - only better.

     C. The way Born-again Believers should be - is exemplified by the church in the book of Acts.

They worship in spirit because they are led by the Holy Spirit who is the one who leads us and teaches us how to apply the Truth  that is recorded in the written word of God (the Bible) and exemplified in the Eternal Word of God (Jesus) (John 1:1-18).

They worship in truth because they live according to the Words and Works of Jesus the "Word of God"

(1 John 1).  The whole book is a powerful book not taking long to read but worthy of much study.

They worship in truth because they practice the principles taught by the Bible not inspired by their feelings.

3. Worship has never been about any building or any location!  23

This is the hour, this is the day, this is the time - we must worship where we are even if it's not where we would like to be.

This may be a practice hour to prepare us for the final hour or it may be the beginning of the final hour. I'm not smart enough to know that.  As Amos said, "I'm not a prophet nor the son of a prophet."

Ponder this: Why would a prophet say that?

But what I do know, is - now is the time to learn how to worship where we are and with whomever will worship God our Father, Jesus our Savior, and the Holy Spirit our Comforter and Counselor in spirit and truth.

May God bless you today as you worship where YOU are with whomever will. Remember Jesus said, "For where two or three are gathered in my name there I will be also." (Matt. 18:20) That may be even by phone. Let's use our technology for the greatest good, the glory of God.

Don't forget to read the Psalm and Proverb of the day so you will be prepared to serve the Lord and speak for Him to someone else.

If you have any questions or I can help in any way let me know.
